Blockchain-based Verification and QR Code for
UTAR Degree Certificates
UTAR adopted the blockchain technology
in March 2018 for enhanced security
and verification of its degree certificates.
UTAR is one of the first few universities
in Asia, if not the world, to implement
this Blockchain technology for university
certificates in 2018.
Graduates receive the hardcopy degree
certificate and the UTAR Blockchain
Certificate (PDF copy) which can be used
to verify the authenticity of the certificate
issued by the university.
The information stored on block chain
Valid is more distributed and encrypted,
Invalid making each block tamper proof, with
the information secured but easily
accessible by all, especially employers
and university partners.
UTAR’s Blockchain Certification System
is the collaborative effort of UTAR and
Silverlake Symmetry and Technology
Research Sdn Bhd and was officially
launched on 9 February 2018 by
Silverlake Founder and Group Chairman
Mr Goh Peng Ooi at UTAR Sungai Long
Campus.
In August 2019, the 29th UTAR convocation degree certificates were encrypted with
QR codes as an additional security feature. By scanning the QR code on the certificate,
verification of the certificate authenticity can be done via the certificate verification
portal at certs.utar.edu.my
As an additional security, the Registry of Graduates on UTAR website (http://www2.
utar.edu.my/eSearchGraduan.jsp) enables verification of graduates in the university with
information on the degree obtained and year of graduation.
Now, every UTAR graduate will have the hardcopy degree certificate protected by
encrypted QR code and the digital certificate secured by blockchain technology, making
the process of verifying the authenticity of the certificate transparent and convenient.
