UTAR Soft Skills Development Certificate (USSDC)
The UTAR Soft Skills Development Certificate (USSDC) programme recognises students’ achievements and
efforts to improve themselves in the areas of communication, leadership, teamwork, strategic thinking, creativity
and commitment to integrity as well as lifelong learning and information management. It involves experiential
learning in training, interaction sessions and activities outside the classroom.
The certification covers training/activities of 7 core components:
1. Communication and Language Skills
2. Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking and Problem Solving Skills
3. Emotional Intelligence and Teamwork Skills
4. Moral and Professional Ethics
5. Leadership Skills
6. Lifelong Learning and Information Management
7. Entrepreneurship Skills
From January 2018 onwards, the 7 core components have been revised to 10 core components:
1. Communication and Language Skills
2. Cognitive, Adaptability & Innovative Skills
3. Complex Problem Solving & Decision Making
4. Critical and Analytical Thinking
5. Emotional Intelligence, Cultural Intelligence and Collaborative Skills
6. Moral and Professional Ethics
7. Leadership Skills
8. Growth Mindset and Lifelong Learning
9. Entrepreneurship Skills
10. Digital Literacy and Technological Skills
Students collect USSDC points by attending soft skills/life skills training programmes and/or through participating
in co-curricular activities relevant to the components listed above.
Grading for 7 components:
Grade Points
Platinum 141 and above
Distinction 126-140
Merit 101-125
Pass 100
Grading for 10 components:
Grade Points
Platinum 151 and above
Distinction 126-150
Merit 101-125
Pass 100
